The first component for the manufacture of masonry products used in construction is clay, which provides the plasticity that facilitates the molding and handling of the product. The second component is the feldspar in form of alumina (Al2O3) which is used as flux. The third one is silica (SiO2) which is used as a filling material and stabilizer. These elements are determined by chemical composition using fluorescence analysis or X-ray diffraction, which is the basis of the modern classification of minerals. Thereby, the main objective of this research is to study the surface characteristics of clay samples from an industrial company producing H-10 blocks in the region of Norte de Santander, by studying the surfaces of the samples selected through the analysis by Atomic Force Microscopy, in order to compare the results with those found in the literature, and at the same time taking into account the chemical elements in their highest composition. The results show that this is a technique that allows the identification of clay components, thus validating what has been found in physical and chemical analysis, expecting to provide a scientific contribution by AFM, because there is little information related to the characterization topography of clay materials.

En la presente investigación se llevó a cabo la ejecución del ensayo de hidrometría a cinco muestras de arcilla de diferentes tipos de una de las empresas dedicadas a la fabricación de bloques H-10 en la región nortesantandereana con los que se determinaron los porcentajes de arenas, limos y arcillas; los cuales fueron ubicados en el diagrama de Winkler para identificar los tipos de arcillas existentes según su textura y el tipo de producto que se puede fabricar para poder formular una mezcla experimental de material cerámico utilizando el software Statgraphics Centurion XV. Los resultados obtenidos demuestran que las arcillas utilizadas actualmente por la empresa se encuentran en los índices mínimos para la elaboración de bloques H-10 con granulometrías superiores a 2 milímetros de diámetro. Con esta investigación se espera poder pronosticar el comportamiento de las mezcla en las etapas del procesos producto con la condiciones tecnológicas de empresa, con lo que evidentemente se mejoraran los recursos ambientales y económicos de la empresa.

General properties of clays from Ceramica Murano Mine, in the municipality of El Zulia, Norte de Santander, have been investigated. Five clay samples were collected from different mantles of the mine. All the samples were characterized using chemical and mineralogical analysis, as well as physical properties like particle size, plasticity, drying and firing shrinkage and water absorption capacity. The chemical and mineralogical results indicated that all samples contained different amount of kaolinite and quartz, followed by hematite and anatase. Low amounts of muscovite were found mainly in samples F2 and F5. These clays are suitable for use as a raw material in creating ceramic construction products, especially for the manufacture of roof tiles and bricks according to the Winkler methodology. The variations found in the characterization of the raw material influence the technological properties of the ceramic that can be obtained from the clays under study.
