: Influenza is a respiratory disease that may cause severe consequences to human health. Influenza caused between 99,000 and 200,000 deaths worldwide in 2019. Studies have reported the presence of this virus in Santander, Colombia, a region with a high humanitarian flow. An influenza vaccine production plant topology has been proposed previously. Nevertheless, the inherent safety and sustainably behavior of this topology is unknown. Process safety plays a crucial role in the evaluation of emerging technologies since it allows the identification of potential risks. Moreover, the current sustainability policies enforce the assessment of processes considering economic, social, and environmental aspects. For this reason, a safety and sustainability evaluation of a vaccine production topology is performed in this work. The inherent safety index (ISI) methodology was implemented to analyze the process. The sustainability evaluation was performed using the sustainability weighted return on investment metric (SWROIM), in which return on investment (ROI), output potential environmental impact (PEI output), total safety inherent index (ITI), and exergy efficiency were considered. The results showed that influenza vaccine production is inherently safe since the total inherent safety index was 11. The destroyed exergy was 378.69 MJ/h, the return on investment was 86%, and the SWROIM was estimated at 81%, which means slightly negative impacts on sustainability

This investigation shows a traditional and advanced exergetic assessment of a waste heat recovery system based on recuperative ORC (organic Rankine cycle) as bottoming cycle of a 2 MW natural gas internal combustion engine. The advanced exergetic evaluation divides the study into two groups, the avoidable and unavoidable group and the endogenous and exogenous group. The first group provides information on the efficiency improvement potential of the components, and the second group determines the interaction between the components. A sensitivity analysis was achieved to assess the effect of condensing temperature, evaporator pinch, and pressure ratio with net power, thermal efficiencies, and exergetic efficiency for pentane, hexane, and octane as organic working fluids, where pentane obtained better energy and exergetic results. Furthermore, an advanced exergetic analysis showed that the components that had possibilities of improvement were the evaporator (19.14 kW) and the turbine (8.35 kW). Therefore, through the application of advanced exergetic analysis, strategies and opportunities for growth in the thermodynamic performance of the system can be identified through the avoidable percentage of destruction of exergy in components.

Influenza is an acute infection that can cause diabetes and heart and lung disease disorders. This illness affects more than 9 million people around the world. The best way to control the transmission of the virus is vaccination. Studies, performed in Santander, Colombia, have found the existence of this disease. Despite the above, there are no companies dedicated to producing influenza vaccines in Colombia. For the first time, exergetic analysis and technical-economic resilience are being performed as combined decision-making tools for the evaluation of an influenza vaccine production plant. The results of exergetic analysis showed that the global exergy efficiency of the process was estimated at 93%. The exergy of waste that resulted was 61.70 MJ/h. The most critical stage of the process is milling, representing 83% of the total destroyed exergy. On the other hand, the results of technoeconomic resilience showed that the break-even point capacity of the process is 2503.15 t/y, representing only 24% of the installed capacity of the plant. The analysis of the effect of raw materials cost on profits showed that the process only resists a rise of 4% in the cost of raw materials, and higher values show economic losses. A value of 215,500 USD/t establishes a critical point for the normalized variable operating costs because higher values do not provide a return on investment.
