This manuscript presents an advanced exergo-economic analysis of a waste heat recovery system based on the organic Rankine cycle from the exhaust gases of an internal combustion engine. Different operating conditions were established in order to find the exergy destroyed values in the components and the desegregation of them, as well as the rate of fuel exergy, product exergy, and loss exergy. The component with the highest exergy destroyed values was heat exchanger 1, which is a shell and tube equipment with the highest mean temperature difference in the thermal cycle. However, the values of the fuel cost rate (47.85 USD/GJ) and the product cost rate (197.65 USD/GJ) revealed the organic fluid pump (pump 2) as the device with the main thermo-economic opportunity of improvement, with an exergo-economic factor greater than 91%. In addition, the component with the highest investment costs was the heat exchanger 1 with a value of 2.769 USD/h, which means advanced exergo-economic analysis is a powerful method to identify the correct allocation of the irreversibility and highest cost, and the real potential for improvement is not linked to the interaction between components but to the same component being studied.

Debido a los problemas que se han presentado por el uso excesivo de las fuentes de energía renovables se hace necesario investigar e incluir las nuevas alternativas energéticas, sin embargo, su implementación es costosa por lo cual es de vital importancia la investigación en la mejora de los mismo. Dentro de estos, se destaca el uso de sistema de recuperación de calor residual debido a la fácil adaptación que poseen, sin embargo, el uso racional de estos sistemas no garantiza un desarrollo amigable y/o sostenible medio ambientalmente. Este trabajo presenta un análisis exergo ambiental avanzado a un sistema de recuperación de calor ORC acoplado a un motor de combustión interna con evaporación indirecta con el fin de determinar la magnitud de cada componente de la planta y de esta manera identificar el potencial real de mejora. La exergía destruida es divida en 4 categorías: endógeno, exógeno, evitable e inevitable a su vez que son dividas en endógeno evitable e inevitable y exógeno evitable e inevitable. Con el fin de hacer el sistema mucho más eficiente se aplica un análisis de sensibilidad a las variables con mayor influencia en el sistema para denotar las oportunidades de mejora desde el punto de vista ambiental. Por último, un análisis de ciclo de vida es aplicado para determinar los impactos y dimensiones ambientales a lo largo de la vida útil del sistema.

In this work, an Organic Rankine Cycle system is used to produce electricity from the waste heat of an internal combustion engine (ICE). The toluene, and cyclohexane, are the selected pure fluids to be compared with the zeotropic mixtures. The zeotropic mixtures used as working fluids are cyclohexane/R11 (0.2/0.8), cyclohexane/R11 (0.25/0.75), and cyclohexane/R11 (0.3/0.7). An energy, exergy and emergy analysis was conducted to assess the sustainability of the whole system and the viability of the zeotropic mixture from the environmental point of view. Finally, a multi-objective optimization was carried out. The results showed that the zeotropic mixtures have better performance compared with the selected pure fluids when the net power and the exergy efficiency are considered. The pure fluids had a better Emergy Sustainability Index (ESI) index by 10% on average, there is not a big difference on this parameter so the advantages of using zeotropic mixtures as working fluids for this type of system cannot t be ignored. However, using the mixture the system obtained a lower Environmental load Ratio (ELR) value compared to cyclohexane and toluene. Finally, the multi-objective optimization was able to maximize the exergy efficiency for the working fluids by about 9.7% and reduce the ESI by 50.94%. This study intends to show the advantage and disadvantage of using zeotropic mixtures as working fluid on waste heat recovery systems that uses Organic Rankine cycle from the environmental point of view and using emergy as a way to asses the sustainability of the whole system.
