Hydrogen is one of the main alternative fuels with the greatest potential to replace fossil fuels due to its renewable and environmentally friendly nature. Due to this, the present investigation aims to evaluate the combustion characteristics, performance parameters, emissions, and variations in the characteristics of the lubricating oil. The investigation was conducted in a spark-ignition engine fueled by gasoline and hydrogen gas. Four engine load conditions (25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%) and three hydrogen gas mass concentration conditions (3%, 6%, and 9%) were defined for the study. The investigation results allowed to demonstrate that the injection of hydrogen gas in the gasoline engine causes an increase of 3.2% and 4.0% in the maximum values of combustion pressure and heat release rates. Additionally, hydrogen causes a 2.9% increase in engine BTE. Hydrogen’s more efficient combustion process allowed for reducing CO, HC, and smoke opacity emissions. However, hydrogen gas causes an additional increase of 14.5% and 30.4% in reducing the kinematic viscosity and the total base number of the lubricating oil. In addition, there was evidence of an increase in the concentration of wear debris, such as Fe and Cu, which implies higher rates of wear in the engine’s internal components.

This study investigates the influence of biodiesel blends produced from agro-industrial residues of palm oil (Elaeis guineensis), on the performance and emission characteristics of a small diameter single-cylinder diesel engine. The engine tests have been performed at three different loads with a constant speed of 3600 rpm. Experimental results have showed that the blends of biodiesel PB5 and PB10 cause a consumption of 1.12% and 2.45% higher than diesel. The addition of biodiesel from palm oil residues has allowed the reduction of CO, CO2, and HC emissions by 28.6%, 12.6%, and 14.3%. However, biodiesel has caused an increase in NOx emissions and smoke density. The evaluation of the thermal efficiency of the brake has showed a difference of 2.4% and 3.7% for PB5 and PB10 compared to conventional diesel. Similar efficiency compared to diesel and significant reductions in CO, CO2, and HC emissions, show that biodiesel blends produced from palm oil agro-industrial wastes have the potential to replace partially the diesel content in the fuel, thus contributing to the reduction of engine emissions and reducing the environmental pollution caused by this type of waste.

The current research analyzes the effect of fuel preheating on performance parameters and emission characteristics in a stationary diesel engine fuelled with palm oil mill effluent biodiesel blends. The investigation has been carried out on an experimental test bench under four-engine load conditions. The fuel injection temperature range is set between 35-75 °C. From the results obtained, it has been possible to demonstrate that the preheating process allows the reduction of fuel consumption and an increase in the efficiency of the engine powered with POME 5 and POME 10 blends. The preheating process has the potential to reduce by 14 % BSFC and increase by 17% the BTE of the engine. Additionally, the results have showed a reduction potential of 17.2%, 16.5%, and 15.6% in CO2, HC, and smoke opacity emissions when preheating processes are used in POME biodiesel blends. In general, this type of strategy is a promising solution to incentivize the use of biodiesel blends from palm oil mill effluent.

This study investigates an alternative fuel methodology for diesel engines that focus on the influence of ethanol as an additive agent in biodiesel blends derived from the industrial liquid waste of palm oil and sunflower oil residues. Specifically, the study addresses relevant aspects of the combustion performance and emissions characteristics in a single-cylinder diesel engine. For the experimental development, four different fuels were tested: commercial diesel, a blend of biodiesel formed from the residual material of palm oil and sunflower oil (PB3SB2), two blends with an addition of 2%, and 4% ethanol in the biodiesel produced (PB3SB2E2 and PB3SB2E4). The engine operated under nine different operation modes following international testing methodologies. Results indicated that incorporating ethanol in the PB3SB2 biodiesel blend improves thermal efficiency by 0.8%. Increasing the ethanol mixing ratio to 4% provides a further efficiency improvement of up to 1.2%. The emissions analysis showed that the addition of ethanol below 4% in the biodiesel blend facilitates the minimization of pollutant levels of CO, CO2, NOx, HC, and smoke opacity compared to the biodiesel formed by the two residual oils (PB3SB2). Overall, ethanol incorporation reduced emissions levels between 7.5 and 13.87% compared to PB3SB2. In conclusion, integrating biodiesel and ethanol as additive agent emerges as a promising alternative to promote a reliable and sustainable operation in diesel engines.

This investigation experimentally examines the influence of hydroxy gas fumigation in a diesel engine fueled with a biodiesel blend derived from waste palm cooking oil (B10). For the experimental tests, a fixed rotation speed of 2000 rpm and a load condition of 50%, 75%, and 100% have been established. Hydroxy gas (HHO) has been added through the engine's air intake system at a flow of 0.5 lpm, 0.75 lpm, and 1 lpm. Results have demonstrated the positive effect of HHO fumigation on the combustion performance of the B10 blend. Moreover, a reduction of 4.3% in the BSFC and a 2.64% increase in peak pressure in B10 due to the presence of HHO have been observed. On the other hand, a decrease of 8.7%, 9.9%, and 22.8% in CO2, HC, and smoke opacity emissions has been evidenced with the addition of HHO in B10. B10 implementation has promoted NOx emission escalation. However, this increase has been only 1.23% compared to pure diesel. In conclusion, HHO enrichment favors combustion performance and emissions minimization, which represents a significant opportunity to mitigate the negative effect of the lower calorific power of these types of fuels.

The current study in Diesel engines is focused on emissions from exhaust gases, as they are causing problems in human health and the ecosystem, because they contain dangerous substances, such as organic carbon, trace elements, elemental carbon and inorganic ions. In this paper, we study the different investigations on pollutant emissions in engines, focused on the mechanisms of formation of pollutants, the techniques to reduce these emissions and how they affect human health. With this, it will be possible to project the necessary improvements in this type of systems, to reduce the impact of these thermal machines on the environment.
