In Norte de Santander, Colombia, there is a ceramic cluster made up of 59 companies dedicated to the production of construction materials derived from clay, a vernacular material with a wide extraction potential in the region. Fired clay products in different hollow block presentations represent 15% of industrial production, these construction pieces are low cost and show a high demand in the local masonry market, therefore, their thermo-physical characteristics largely build the thermal envelope of “Cucuteña”. This research comparatively evaluates the thermal behavior of four types of ceramic blocks with different perforations, applying the finite element method in thermal simulations that consider a conductivity of 0.407 W/m°C in the ceramic to establish the influence of the shape on the temperature distribution and heat flow profiles of each piece subjected to environmental conditions of a warm semi-arid climate, with average maximum temperatures of 33 °C and an average maximum solar radiation of 796.8 Wh/m² under extreme climatic conditions in the city of San Jose de Cúcuta, Colombia. The results of the study allow identifying the ceramic block of 6 rectangular holes as the product that, due to its physical characteristics, presents a better alternative to be applied in constructions that seek thermal efficiency.

Considerando las oportunidades que presenta la porosidad para incrementar la resistencia térmica de materiales cerámicos, este estudio se articula desde el marco del diseño para añadir propiedades térmicamente eficientes a bloques de arcilla cocida en la generación de soluciones constructivas de bajo costo para climas tropicales cálidos. La investigación aplica como aditivo tecnológico residuos de madera añadiendo aserrín al 5% en una matriz de arcilla roja al 95% para fabricar un producto cerámico que presenta a su vez modificaciones en la morfología de los tabiques internos interrumpiendo la conductancia por puente térmico, y evalúa de forma comparativa la influencia del aumento de espesor en la pieza y la adición de paredes internas como técnicas para reducir la transmisión de calor en una unidad constructiva; el objetivo de este desarrollo es perfeccionar el desempeño térmico de un bloque cerámico tipo H10 como uno de los productos más demandado en la construcción de mampostería en la región Norte de Santander, Colombia. La metodología utilizada se divide en dos fases, en una primera etapa se desarrollan simulaciones térmicas en software ANSYS R16 para determinar perfiles de distribución de temperatura y flujo de calor estudiando en un primer análisis un bloque estándar de seis huecos rectangulares en una composición de 100% arcilla y en una segunda situación evaluando una pieza tipo bloque tradicional y tres casos con formas disipadoras de calor en una composición de 5% aserrín y 95% arcilla en las muestras; finalmente, se toman los especímenes que presentan mejor desempeño para ejecutar análisis físico-mecánicos implementando la Norma Técnica Colombiana 4017 que permitan caracterizar la viabilidad técnica del producto. Los resultados muestran la efectividad de las estrategias aplicadas para reducir la transmisión de calor, presentando una oportunidad de desarrollo en las formas disipadoras de los tabiques y en la implementación de sustitutos residuales formadores de poros para productos cerámicos, rescatando características de una pieza tradicional para configurar unidades constructivas más eficientes.

Con un clima cálido tropical tipificado como subhúmedo seco, la ciudad de Cúcuta en Colombia es un caso de estudio interesante para el desarrollo de soluciones constructivas térmicamente eficientes. Así, el presente libro se fundamenta en los parámetros del clima para evaluar el comportamiento térmico de las piezas constructivas fabricadas por la industria de la cerámica de Norte de Santander. Esto con el objetivo de definir estrategias y elaborar lineamientos de diseño en la concepción y adecuación de la envolvente arquitectónica en la región. El modelo metodológico inicia con una introducción general del lugar: su ubicación, definición climática, su arquitectura y envolvente, todo ello con un enfoque específico en la cerámica como materialidad constructiva desde la definición de los procesos industriales, los productos destacados y su aplicación en la edificación de cerramientos verticales. Por otro lado, en una segunda etapa se describen los parámetros en los que se encuentra inmersa la envolvente en la ciudad de Cúcuta: temperatura, radiación, vientos y humedad, desarrollando con datos meteorológicos un análisis climático de preexistencias. Entretanto, en el tercer capítulo se realiza una caracterización física de las piezas constructivas más utilizadas en mampostería cerámica a partir de la definición de sus dimensiones, formas y sistemas constructivos en tres tipologías generales: bloques, ladrillos y calados. Posteriormente, en el cuarto capítulo se describe el comportamiento térmico de las unidades constructivas analizadas en el capítulo anterior a partir de un análisis térmico de distribución de temperatura y flujo decalor implementando método de elementos finitos. Lo anterior con el objetivo de generar una evaluación comparativa entre las muestras e identificar aquellos productos que presentan ventajas térmicas en envolventes verticales. Finalmente, y a partir de un modelo proyectual, se generan estrategias para ejecutar mejoras en el diseño de producto a partir de la aplicación de técnicas en la forma y la función de las piezas que permitan optimizar su desempeño térmico en sistemas de cerramiento de un clima cálido evaluando la posibilidad de proveer eficiencia en la arquitectura cucuteña.

This work is based on previous studies that explores the partitions structure morphology in Blocks H10 establishing a model of 6 horizontal cavities for low thermal conductivity and having oblique geometry partitions to interrupt heat conduction by direct thermal bridge inside of the constructive unit called Form-C, which is taken as the object of analysis, adding 5% organic coffee cisco additive in the 95% clay mixture to increase the porosity with a proportion that does not affect the deterioration of the mechanical properties and allow to optimize the thermal insulation capacity regarding to a traditional product. Methodologies: in the first phase, prototypes of Block H10 with Form-A are manufactured by extrusion at the laboratory level as a comparative witness of the properties of a standard piece and Form-C as a piece with thermo-insulating strategies to execute physical-ceramic, geometric evaluations of mechanical resistance and water absorption applying the Norma Técnica Colombiana 4017 for masonry units. In the second stage, simulations of temperature distribution and heat flow are prepared by finite element method in ANSYS R16 software to determine the incidence of the variables in the mixture on heat transfer. The results obtained from thermal simulations show an energy decrease of 1.5 °C on average in relation to Form-A. In conclusion, the use of agro industrial scraps and the implementation of passive design techniques in the ceramic piece generate added value in a product that can be industrialized with improvements in technological properties from a thermal efficiency perspective in construction ceramics.

This research focuses on the study of two of the most economical and used products in building materials constructions in the city: the blocks manufactured by extruded H-10 of 6 rectangular cavities with market dimensions L: 300 mm, W: 100 mm, H: 200 mm and H-15 of 9 rectangular cavities of size L: 300 mm, W: 150 mm, H: 200 mm and seeks to report its physicalmechanical characteristics to compare the impact of the variables in the units thermal behavior in the enclosure system. This work is carried out by applying 2 methods: in the first phase tests are carried out at the laboratory level using the Norma Técnica Colombiana 4017 and the Norma Técnica Colombiana 4205 to determine the qualitative properties of the building units in each format, and a simulation of temperature distribution and heat flux by finite element method in software ANSYS R16 evaluating the incidence of variables in the heat transfer in a traditional masonry system, evaluating the thermal performance in extreme temperature conditions of 33 °C typical of the region. The results show a difference of 0.709 °C between the thermal behavior between the formats, with a reduction of final thermal energy by the approximate increase of 50 mm in the thickness, this variant presents an opportunity of development to minimize the impacts of the loads of temperature in the envelope, favorable for warm tropical climates.

Reconociendo las problemáticas del contexto urbano ambiental, así como, las dinámicas y requerimientos involucrados en el desarrollo de los procesos formativos. Implementando estrategias urbanas que buscan consolidar y articular el proyecto al campus universitario, Por medio de una red espacios y elementos para la identificación, apropiación y expresión sociocultural del cuerpo estudiantil del plan de estudios de arquitectura, la universidad y la ciudad. Favoreciendo la vocación académica del edificio como un hito arquitectónico, con un valor estético único, debido a la implementación de una pieza de arcilla diseñada como aporte a la innovación y la identidad material de la región.

The cooked block H10 of dimensions L: 300 mm, A: 100 mm, H: 200 mm and 6 rectangular cavities is the leading product of the ceramic masonry industry in the Norte de Santander region, this research takes as its starting point its Initial characteristics: dimension, shape and weight to perform a morphological exploration of the geometry of the internal cells in this constructive unit in search of the optimization of its thermal properties to obtain insulation in high temperatures of 33 ° C characteristic of warm climates, a study framed in the context of clay as a vernacular material under the environmental conditions of Cúcuta city, Colombia, structuring an exploration that articulates strategies towards the development of energy efficiency. A finite element method (FEM) was applied in ANSYS R16 simulation software to establish comparatively the thermal behavior in the standard product of Form-A and 3 variations in the type of internal cells in the same thickness of 100mm and 6 horizontal cavities, applied analysis of temperature distribution and heat flow in a traditional masonry building system with equal heat incidence in the initial surface; the results allow to compare the final temperature derived from the morphologies in the Form-B, Form-C and Form-D, from the analysis is derived 54.948 W/m2 in the heat flow on the partitions of the Form-C as the geometry with better performance, achieving a decrease in thermal energy of 0.981 ° C in the final surface of the enclosure related to Form-A this procedure links up the variables that favor the dissipation of energy from -the form-, a passive technique that can be applied from the industrial process to reduce the p

The architectural envelope constitutes more than the aesthetic expression of the building, currently it represents one of the most important challenges in the configuration of energy efficiency in buildings, the materials that build this skin are responsible for the energy flows that enter the built space, an aspect that becomes especially relevant in tropics climates with warm temperatures up to 33 °C; From this context, the design as an innovation tool allows the configuration of strategies to grant physical properties to the construction units capable of reducing heat transfer through the optimization of its components. Within this investigation, the addition of passive cooling strategies in ceramic pieces designed with sustainable principles is analyzed. As a methodology, thermal simulations are carried out by finite element method considering a thermal conductivity of a ceramic of 0.407 W/m•k applied to three pieces with thermal insulating design to analyze the comparative results in relation to the behavior of temperature distribution and heat flow. This paper presents the results of applying design criteria in innovative pieces for masonry enclosures from the perspective of sustainability based on the thermal properties of a vernacular material, clay, in the Norte de Santander, Colombia.
