This paper presents three different approaches to recognize driving style based on a hierarchical-model. Specifically, it proposes a hierarchical model for the recognition of the driving style for advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) for vehicles. This hierarchical model for the recognition of the style of the car driving considers three aspects: the driver emotions, the driver state, and finally, the driving style itself. In this way, the proposed hierarchical pattern is composed of three levels of descriptors/features, one to recognize the emotional states, another to recognize the driver state, and the last one to recognize the driving style. Each level has a set of descriptors, which can be sensed in a real context. Finally, the paper presents three driving style recognition algorithms based on different paradigms. One is based on fuzzy logic, another is based on chronicles (a temporal logic paradigm), and the last is based on an algorithm that uses the idea of the recognition process of the neocortex, called Ar2p (Algoritmo Recursivo de Reconocimiento de Patrones, for its acronym in Spanish). In the paper, these approaches are compared using real datasets, using different metrics of interest in the context of the Internet of the Things, in order to determine their capabilities of reasoning, adaptation, and the communication of information. In general, the initial results are encouraging, specifically in the cases of chronicles and Ar2p, which give the best results.

This paper defines a new recursive pattern matching model based on the theory of the systemic functioning of the human brain, called pattern recognition theory of mind, in the context of the dynamic pattern recognition problem. Dynamic patterns are characterized by having properties that change in intervals of time, such as a pedestrian walking or a car running (the negation of a dynamic pattern is a static pattern). Novel contributions of this paper include: (1) Formally develop the concepts of dynamic and static pattern, (2) design a recursive pattern matching model, which exploits the idea of recursivity and time series in the recognition process, and the unbundling/integration of pattern to recognize, and (3) develop strategies of pattern matching from two major orientations: recognition of dynamic patterns oriented by characteristic, or oriented by perception. The model is instantiated in several cases, to analyze its performance.

Microservices is an architectural style for service-oriented distributed computing, and is being widely adopted in several domains, including autonomous vehicles, sensor networks, IoT systems, energy systems, telecommunications networks and telemedicine systems. When migrating a monolithic system to a microservices architecture, one of the key design problems is the “microservice granularity definition”, i.e., deciding how many microservices are needed and allocating computations among them. This article describes a semantic grouping algorithm (SEMGROMI), a technique that takes user stories, a well-known functional requirements specification technique, and identifies number and scope of candidate microservices using semantic similarity of the user stories’ textual description, while optimizing for low coupling, high cohesion, and high semantic similarity. Using the technique in four validation projects (two state-of-the-art projects and two industry projects), the proposed technique was compared with domain-driven design (DDD), the most frequent method used to identify microservices, and with a genetic algorithm previously proposed as part of the Microservices Backlog model. We found that SEMGROMI yields decompositions of user stories to microservices with high cohesion (from the semantic point of view) and low coupling, the complexity was reduced, also the communication between microservices and the estimated development time was decreased. Therefore, SEMGROMI is a viable option for the design and evaluation of microservices-based applications. The proposed semantic similarity-based technique (SEMGROMI) is part of the Microservices Backlog model, which allows to evaluate candidate microservices graphically and based on metrics to make design-time decisions about the architecture of the microservicesbased application.

Microservices are an architectural style of service-oriented applications that allow the application to be divided into independent and autonomous units, which can be individually developed, tested, deployed (mainly in the cloud), scaled and monitored. The application then becomes a composition and integration of small distributed systems. In this paper, a case study is presented, where the Information system for the planning of soccer training, is developed, following the architectural style of microservices. It presents the architecture defined for the information system and its implementation using DevOps practices, among them, continuous delivery, continuous deployment and automated tests. The level of granularity of each microservice is evaluated using domain-driven design and the definition of delimited contexts. Defining the optimal size of microservices is fundamental, directly affecting performance, maintainability, storage, transactions, distributed queries, use and consumption of network and computational resources. On the other hand, the development of the information system allows improving the planning of soccer training using modern sports training techniques. System for the planning of soccer training can be used by soccer teams, clubs, physical trainers, coaches and technical directors both amateur and professional, as a software as a service application.

The Software Engineering Research Group of the University Francisco de Paula Santander has been implementing projects based on the development of methodologies for the creation of software; thus, as part of these projects a study of the use and knowledge of Agile Methodologies was conducted. The study was based on the application of a survey to determine the preference of IT professionals in identifying the most agile methodologies used in development groups in Colombia and to determine the selection criteria. The survey was applied to a sample of one hundred and four (104) professionals from a population of one thousand two hundred and thirty-four (1234) Systems Engineers; graduates from the Systems Engineering program who work as developers throughout the country. From the study, it can be concluded that Colombia is keeping up with global trends in the use of Agile methodologies; as a result, 73% of the professionals surveyed applied an agile methodology for the development of software products and of the percentage obtained, 43.42% used the Scrum methodology and 19.7% applied the Scrum/XP hybrid.

Technical debt payment and prevention through the lenses of software architects

Context: Architectural decisions are considered one of the most common sources of technical debt (TD). Thus, it is necessary to understand how TD is perceived by software architects, particularly, the practices supporting the elimination of debt items from projects, and the practices used to reduce the chances of TD occurrence. Objective: This paper investigates the most commonly used practices to pay off TD and to prevent debt occurrence in software projects from the architect’s point of view. Method: We used the available data from InsighTD, which is a globally distributed family of industrial surveys on the causes, effects, and management of TD. We analyze responses from a corpus of 72 software architects from Brazil, Chile, Colombia, and the United States. Results: Results showed that refactoring (30.2%) was the main practice related to TD payment, followed by design improvements (14.0%). Refactoring, design improvements, and test improvements are the most cited payment practices among cases of code, design and test debt. Concerning the TD preventive practices, we find that having a well-defined architecture and design is the most cited practice (13.6%), followed by having a well-defined scope and requirements. This last practice is the most cited one for expert software architects. Finally, when comparing preventive practices among the three major roles derived from the survey (software architects, engineer roles, and management roles), we found that none of the roles shared the most cited practice, meaning that each role had its worries and focus on different strategies to reduce TD’s presence in the software. Conclusion: The lists of TD payment and prevention practices can guide software teams by having a catalog of practices to keep debt controlled or reduced.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is comprised of a group of heterogeneous neurodevelopmental conditions, typically characterized by a triad of symptoms consisting of (1) impaired communication, (2) restricted interests, and (3) repetitive and stereotypical behavior pattern. An accurate and early diagnosis of autism can provide the basis for an appropriate educational and treatment program. In this work, we propose a computational model using a Multilayer Fuzzy Cognitive Map (hereafter referred to as MFCM) based on standardized behavioral assessments diagnosing the ASD (MFCM-ASD). The two standards used in the model are: the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition (ADOS2), and the Autism Diagnostic Interview Revised (ADIR). The MFCM’s are a soft computing technique characterized by robust properties that make it an effective technique for medical decision support systems. For the evaluation of the MFCM-ASD model, we have used real datasets of diagnosed cases, so as to compare against other method/approaches. Initial experiments demonstrated that the proposed model outperforms conventional Fuzzy Cognitive Maps (FCMs) for ASD diagnosis. Our MFCM-ASD model serves as a diagnostic tool required to support the medical decisions when determining the correct diagnosis of Autism in children with different cognitive characteristics.
